SOME SONGS BY
CERTAIN VICTORY:

"All Away"

by Paul Lytle

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Romans 6:17-18

Lurking somewhere deep within my mind
Surprises me what I sometimes find

Take it all away
All my nature desires stay
Take my fears away
Help me start anew today

Eyes wide open, I am trapped again
My own making, and I am locked within

Take it all away
All my nature desires stay
Take my fears away
Help me start anew today

Take it all away
All my nature desires stay
Take my fears away
Help me start anew today

Heavenly Father, take away my sinful nature and make me a slave of righteousness. Guide me so that sin can never again take hold of me. Amen.

One of the greatest surprises in my life as a Christian was how true that the promise in the above verse from Romans is. I had read of this transformation before, so I was rather expecting something, but it was not something that happened all at once, and it not something that is finished in me. I have been taken out of sin, seemingly, in stages, usually soon after I pray to be rid of a certain sin.

Here's why this is so surprising: With God's help, stepping away from certain behavior has become easy. Before becoming a Christian, I sought to be a moral person, and generally did a good job at it, but I had problems with certain immoral actions. No matter how hard I tried, I could not take a single step toward morality in these areas. Now, I am constantly making progress.

It is not by our own will that we can become good. We cannot force ourselves to love, to hope, and to believe. It is only through the Cross that we succeed.

I am in no way perfect, but my inclination now is to do what is right, while before I had to fight against myself to walk that path.
