SOME SONGS BY
CERTAIN VICTORY:

"Down That Hole"

by Paul Lytle

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. Yet You are holy.

Psalm 22:1-3

Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

Galatians 6:9

I wanted to believe you
But I was untrue
How could I believe
When I cast my faults on you?
Surely you were guilty as me
Surely you were lying like me

I wanted to trust you
But it don't make no sense
Why everyone's against me
Why everyone's incensed
Surely you were guilty as me
Surely you were just like me

I start out so excited
Then I'm sinking down that hole

Surely you were guilty as me
Surely you were just like me

I start out so excited
Then I'm sinking down that hole
Now I'm not so excited
I've stuck myself down that hole

Heavenly Father, I confess great weakness. My heart is weary, and I desire rest. Forgive me of my heavy heart, for You have proven Your faithfulness too many times for me to doubt now. Restore me, O Father, as only You can do. Amen.

Why do I not trust the Lord in times of great trial? Perhaps this is more accurate: I call upon Him, plead for strength, and believe, and yet I tend to rely on my own devices in these times rather than the strength of God. Why is that? I know the reason, and it is flawed. In such times of darkness, I can think of God as no better than me.

What I mean is that I really do not believe that God knows a better way. In my anger, in my hurt, I am blinded to the relief of Christ. Surely He will understand my position! Surely He will not blame my actions, for there is no other way out!

Of course, there is another way out. Christ has told us, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). It is the yoke of Christ that we find rest. Let me put it on, Father, and lean upon you, for I am weary.

Is my problem the opposite of the norm? Usually, a man goes to God in hard times and ignores Him in the good ones. I do not believe that my failings here are so rare, which is why I ultimately wrote this song. I believe these feelings are not so uncommon, and that others can be comforted by the reassurance that they are not alone in this. But all the better if God uses it to bring someone back to Him.
