SOME SONGS BY

"An Explanation of Benefits"

by Paul Lytle

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

John 10:10

Come in brother have a seat
Let me wash your feet
But leave your grin outside
It wouldn't seem appropriate
Your emotions whet
This is a solemn ride

I'm not looking for a bed of roses
I'm looking for some joy
He washed away my sins
So don't pretend
That I have some more

Tell me where's the sin in living life?
I want it to the full
Accepting Him's supposed to remove the wool

Welcome brother but leave
That sadness be
We've nothing but shiny smiles
You know feeling down's sin
So no frowning
Now come in for a while

Tell me where's the sin in living life?
I want it to the full
Accepting Him's supposed to remove the wool

Tell me where's the sin in living life?
I want all He'll give
Seeking joy but failing not at strife
I mean to really live
Stepping into something I'm to be
Until I find I'm full
Accepting Him's supposed to remove the wool

Heavenly Father, give me life in You, whether that life brings happiness or sadness. Let me learn to trust You in both joy or sorrow. I know that You will not allow anything to destroy me. Amen.

My English major friends will forgive me for using "whet" as an adjective, but it works. What can you do?

There was one time I was in a Christian chat room (long ago, when I was actually interested in chat rooms). The one woman there told me that I wasn't really saved unless I was happy 100% of the time. If I was ever sad, then I knew I wasn't saved.

I didn't think that many Christians would make that mistake, but now I find a very large church in Houston preaching that every Sunday. Jesus promises us "life," not "happiness." And life comes with pain. It comes with death, heartache, disappointed, and anger. Jesus wept, my friends, and if Jesus, in all His strength, wept, then I in my weakness will weep as well. I will not be ashamed of that.

The other mistake many Christians make is to think that we're not allowed to have any fun. Again we must come to that promise of life. We are to experience peace, joy, love, and, yes, sorrow, in ways that the rest of the world cannot imagine. We are to laugh together and worship, but if you do not also weep for those who are lost, then you are not living that promise.

We are called to follow Christ. His walk led Him through both pain (quite a bit of it) and joy. What makes us think our walk will be any different? And yet with Christ we are promised something that no one else can offer — life. He died upon the Cross so that we may live, and live within the glory of God forever, amen. Do not mistake this call for misery or happiness either, but of freedom, love, and grace. We trade our expectations for Christ. And what a wondrous trade it is.
