"Oh, Well (A Meditation)"
by Paul Lytle
If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
Luke 14:26
"Be still, and know that I am God."
Psalm 46:10a
If I lay down my worth
Yes, I lay down my worth
If I lay down my dreams
Yes I lay down my schemes
Oh, well
Oh, well
Oh, well
Be still
No loss
If I lay down my time
Well, it never was mine
If I lay down myself
Yes, I lay down myself
Oh, well
Oh, well
Oh, well
Be still
No loss
If I lay down my life
Yes, I lay down my life
No loss

Heavenly Father, give me the strength to let go of those things that will pass away. Keep my eyes on those things above, so that I will never be confused as to what is important and what will fade away. Amen.
This meditation is primarily on a rather strongly worded statement that Christ made (which is quoted above). In the end, everything must pale beside our love for Him. Nothing else must be that important.
Is that something we can accomplish? Can we love Christ so much that nothing else can hope to compare? Why not? We do it every day for money by staying at work late instead of coming home to our families. We do it every day with sex, by chasing one-night-stand’s rather than considering how it will affect our spouses. We do it with fame, with pride, and with hatred.
Love is not something we can force ourselves to do. We cannot make ourselves love someone. What we can do is make Christ such a focus for us that this sort of love will blossom. In prayer, meditation, and study of Scripture, Christ will move Himself into the center of our lives. When that happens, this verse suddenly makes perfect sense. We have not stopped loving others (quite the opposite we love them all the more), but the light of Christ has become our very core.
