SOME SONGS BY
CERTAIN VICTORY:

"Redeem Me"

by Paul Lytle

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

See a new star and followed signs
Never noticed that I was blind
No more
Please redeem me

Drowning in the endless sea
I fall down on my knees
Get up — and remember

Pleasure, pain: I knew not one
All these shadows had made me numb
No more
You redeem me

Drowning in the endless sea
I fall down on my knees
Get up — and remember

Hopelessly lost but found with ease
I fall down on my knees
Get up — and remember

Heavenly Father, help me to remember how lost and desperate I was so that I can understand exactly what Your mercy can do. I thank You for remaining with me so that I do not have to fear evil. Amen.

I quote Psalm 23 on this one because the lyrics of this song remind me of that one. The images are allegorical, of course, just like the "valley of the shadow of death" is. We are trying to put physical symbols to the feeling of death and dispar.

I knew a girl once who resisted Christianity because she wanted to have fun first. It's a common reasoning, and this girl was common to the type of people who make the argument. In a word, she was miserable! She was constantly in this state of lethergy, where she could not get excited or happy over anything.

That's what Satan wants. He offers us "fun," but in the end, we become numb. If you consider the sins of the world, they all have this effect of diminishing returns. The next sin is not as fun as the last, and so they must become bigger. Greed can never be sated with money. The first dollar is so sweet, but soon a million does not matter. Sexual perversion does not correct itself. It grows worse. A thief, left to his own devices, will steal more and more.

And after a while, none of these actions have the same emotional effect as they originally did. None become more satisfying. They all lead to numbness.

That is why, in the end, a life in Christ is so much more joyful. He makes things new rather than old.
