Certain Victory The Story
So I was done with music, or at least publically. I had been a part of a few bands in my time, but none of them had really gone anywhere. The first was a Christian group called Certain Victory that I formed in junior high. We ended up with a bagful of bad songs that no one had heard but us (which was probably for the best). I then tried to start a mainstream band under various names, but never got more than one of two people to join at any given time. The only time I had actually played with a full band was with the church worship team.
That part, at least would change in the late nineties, when I got a call from a man in my mother's Bible Study. She had told him that I play guitar. His band needed a lead player, and so he called me. I told him that I strictly played rhythm guitar, but he said that I could learn with the band, since there were a couple of new musicians there.
I went and joined as their lead player. I enjoyed it immensely, but we definitely had our problems. A few of us wanted to play good ol' Rock 'n' Roll. Others wanted to play pop stuff, while others wanted to strictly play cover songs. The conflict was so great that we never branched out in any one direction. We played the same twelve cover songs for a year, and they sounded bad. I presented the band with several original songs, but they had no interest. We continued on our path until I grew too disgusted to continue. I left, swearing off bands forever, and I concentrated on fiction writing. I still played guitar regularly, and still recorded for my own pleasure, but I had not interest in playing with a group except occasionally at church.
So I was surprised when I felt God calling me to reform Certain Victory. I had been praying for some meaning in my life, but by meaning, I meant for God to get my books published. I have some talent in that area, and I believed that was what I was meant to do with my life. But the answer to my prayer was clear to me: Go do music. I resisted for a while, but the message was clear.
I began composing again, but a strange thing happened. I wrote a song called "Certain Victory," one I planned to use at the beginning of a show. But the song turned out to have an odd Classic Rock feel with a modern sound. I had never written anything like it before. The next song was a Praise & Worship song, a genre in which I had never composed. God was laying a path for me that I had not considered before.
So I envisioned a quintet, with myself singing and playing lead guitar. God had another surprise for me; He told me that someone else was to sing. I didn't like it, but I felt I needed to concentrate on guitar and composition.
So now I am looking for the rest of the band. I have never been able to form a band successfully before, so God will have to lead me if this is going to be done properly. But I would be disappointed if those new members did not feel the same purpose and leading that I do in this. God wants something out of us, and we must be prepared to give it.
